Why Create Mama’s Book Cellar?
As I've been learning and growing in my parenting journey, I have asked friends and family members to share insights and recommendations. Most had little tidbits they learned along the way and some had recommended books. I have always been an avid reader and appreciated a book recommendation - something I could look through on my own time and take away applicable knowledge and tailor it to my parenting style. I also loved having a physical copy of a book so I could flip to a specific section whenever I wanted.
As I dug more and more into parenting books, I found that some are exceptional… and some are not. The only way I could know the exceptional from the unremarkable was based on my own read of the book. I feel like many parents or soon-to-be parents are in this same boat - spending countless, precious hours reading only to find that they didn't even like the book or couldn't find anything helpful from it.
The same thing goes for children's books. There are millions of children's books out there by thousands of authors. In 2022, over 250.76 million children’s books were sold, which is absolutely staggering. How the heck do you find a good, quality book that has a great storyline, cool artwork, entertaining for both the adult and child, and is in alignment with your values and beliefs? Well, you Google or put into Amazon very generic topics such as:
Books for toddlers
Books for 2-year-olds
Christmas books for kids
Kids books about trucks (or whatever topic your kid is interested in)
List of children's book series
Then you get a ton of results that you have to filter down further based on best sellers, teacher's picks, editor's picks, or highest rated (and maybe you don't filter and go with just the first ones you see). Most of the books that appear in a search like this are the most popular and mainstream books. What if you have read those or your child has outgrown them? Where else can you go for unique books - books that have great life lessons, different perspectives, and amazing artwork to engage your child? If you have a Goodreads account, you can enter book titles, authors, or genres into Goodreads to see reviews and ratings.
All of that work takes SO much time to do and you don't really have the confidence in the book until it arrives, you read it, and you decide for yourself. That can't be good enough for people and I think we can do better. I want to give back those countless hours parents spend searching so parents find high quality, trusted books for themselves and their child or children in one simple site.
