How Do You Like to Read Your Books?
I had a recent conversation about how I like to read books - a physical book, an e-book, or an audiobook? My gut reaction to this was a physical book, of course! There are so many things I love about having a physical book in my hand. First, the smell of a book… YESSSS! I love how books smell and the experience that smell brings with them. The smell of books takes me instantly to a different place and I truly enjoy that part of the reading experience. Second, the weight and texture of holding a book. Books just feel nice in your hands! Third, actually visibly seeing the progress I am making as I read the book. In a highly digital world, it is difficult to see progress at times since it is all tucked into a screen. Seeing myself make visible progress on something gives me gratification and motivation to keep reading. Fourth, I pay attention more and have better engagement when I read a physical copy of a book instead of an e-book or audiobook. I'm more present and into the storyline and characters which helps me absorb and remember more of the book. Fun fact - according to Words Rated “60.70% of readers multitask while reading ebooks, and over 70.00% of readers perform other activities while listening to audiobooks”
Now, I will share that I do own a Kindle. It was a gift from my husband nearly 8 years ago and at first, I used it all the time. I linked it up to my local library, got all the right apps on it, and started downloading books. I am ashamed to say… that I never use it. Never. I still have it and it is in my nightstand drawer, yet, I never use it. I need an actual book with actual paper in order to read. My experience with audiobooks is similar to e-books.
A quick story, my husband and I lived in Utah for 2 years when we re-located from West Michigan to Salt Lake City for work opportunities. There, I took the train to work everyday which was a 2 hour, round trip, commitment. While taking the train to work and thought I should try out audiobooks. What a great way to start and end the working day - by listening to books. Seriously though, it was the same experience as e-books. I got everything setup, I found some books that I wanted to read / listen to and I tried multiple times… couldn't get into the book, or my mind would wander to something else, or I would start mindlessly scrolling on my phone. Nope… not for me. I need a physical book to read.
On my website, you’ll find books that are linked to physical copies of books for purchase. That is what I enjoy and how it up. I know that others enjoy e-books and audiobooks. I am so happy for you that you are able to read content in that form and what matters to me is that those who parent are reading. Reading to themselves and reading to others!
